Six removal pathways we track

Each pathway trades off energy demand, cost, land, permanence, and measurability differently.

Direct air capture (DAC)

Machines that strip CO2 from ambient air. Highly measurable and durable when paired with geological storage; the challenge is energy demand and cost per tonne.

Mineralization

Locking CO2 into carbonate minerals — in concrete, mine tailings, or injected basalt. Very durable; scaling depends on feedstock logistics.

Biochar

Pyrolysing biomass into a stable carbon that improves soils. Deployable today at low cost; durability is measured in decades to centuries and depends on conditions.

BECCS

Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage — biomass power or fuels with the CO2 captured and stored. Couples energy output with removal; land and feedstock are the constraints.

Enhanced weathering

Spreading crushed silicate rock so it reacts with CO2 naturally, faster. Large theoretical potential; MRV in open fields is the active research frontier.

Ocean-based removal

Alkalinity enhancement and marine biomass approaches. Vast potential scale, earliest stage on measurement and ecosystem safeguards.
